DAB Aerials
The standard aerials that are supplied with some radios and hi-fis will never be as effective as an externally fitted DAB aerial. With the obvious barriers of internal and external walls, the DAB signal has to navigate the local terrain including trees, other houses or buildings, and hills.
DAB Signal
DAB, or Digital Audio Broadcasting, signals differ from FM signals and so do the aerials. Some of the DAB signals are transmitted over a Single Frequency Network (SFN), which is different to FM in one fundamental way and that is FM signal frequencies vary from region to region for a single Radio station whereas DAB radio stations are, as the SFN name suggests, on a single frequency throughout the country. Consequently DAB aerials should ideally be professionally installed and quality advice sought.

DAB Reception
Whilst DAB radio is perceived to be interference free there are issues when DAB aerials are not picking up the complete signal. The main complaint is from 'boiling mud' or 'bubbling', so named due to the apparent sounds heard when listening to a radio station.
Essentially this is caused by too many parts of the signal being missed or not picked-up, a problem usually solved with the installation of dedicated DAB aerial.
